This big playground is a destination on the east side of Prospect Park.
There's a lot to like about this playground set in a specious protected area with lots of trees. The sandbox is hard to miss if you are trying to have a sand-free park experience. It sits dead center, as does the water when it’s on, which can be a problem if you are trying to keep a kid dry and not too sandy.
The one limitation here is that it’s basically an entire playground designed for younger children. The equipment is smaller and lower to the ground, but it is sprawling and fun. The space is well contained and tucked behind trees and bushes.
Lots of interconnected ramps, and many different levels for climbing.
Our toddler was mostly distracted by the sand which meant he only did a bit of exploring on the rest of the equipment. This would also be great for small children's parties, and there probably are these here at other times as well.
The Prospect Park Alliance is preparing to raise money to replace this playground. They plan on spending $3m, which seems like a lot of money for a playground is both in excellent condition and very good, especially when so many other neighborhood playgrounds are in need. The first playground was built in 1941 as part of a WPA project.
