Located just off Main Street behind the community recreational center, the Chatham playground is large and spacious.
We first visited this playground when our toddler had just learned to swing. We weren't yet reviewing playgrounds so we didn't bother taking photos. Our return trips were foiled until recently. Nap time, fog, and our toddler running into the recreation center all delayed this review.
Finally, over Memorial Day weekend we returned and our toddler didn't fall asleep and there was no fog or rain.
The best part of this playground is the lighthouse structure, although it's not possible to climb into the lighthouse as it is just a roof. The playground equipment is in decent condition considering the battering the structures take from bad weather and salt air.
There is a second structure that looks like a ship, and I'm always fond of playgrounds with a good theme. The chain ladder attached this wasn't set correctly or had broken, but otherwise it was a fun addition. There was a structure for hanging shade cloths, but these had not yet been installed – and this playground is definitely exposed to sun (unless it's a cloudy day).
Chatham is a destination for shops and restaurants and this playground is just off the main traffic circle, so it's a convenient location for anyone walking around the town. The most interesting aspect of this playground is the proximity to the Anglers's baseball stadium. The Anglers are part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and play games during the summer across the Cape. During a game, the area can be quite crowded and the playground a great distraction for smaller children.
We're hoping to catch an Anglers game this season, so I'm sure we'll be back at this playground again soon, but that's also what I thought two years ago.
The field was founded in 1923 and the Chatham Anglers were a charter team in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
