The lively playground on the edge of a grassy field provides a great place for local kids (and visitors!) to play.
Memorial Field is a huge park a few blocks north of Main Street in Beacon, a small Hudson Valley town at the northern edge of Metro North rail service. It's a favorite for destination for day trippers out of Brooklyn (us) and a diverse community of residents who can access the city by regular train service.
The playground has three main areas. The first a fenced in space for very small children. There are some shade covers here and the fence provides some extra protection from runners. The equipment in this section was all very new.
The second area is a large sand-covered area with two climbing structures with slides and ladders. This equipment is older but in good condition. One structure sort of looked like a train if you closed your eyes.
The third section was actually up a hill in a wooded area and featured all types of natural objects for climbing. There were guide ropes suspended between trees and large pieces of carved wood for climbing. There also pathways created with tree stumps for balance. Overall our toddler enjoyed this quite a bit and made some friends with other kids.
This was a great detour after lunch and wandering around downtown Beacon and satisfied our toddler's need to play before driving back to Brooklyn. We walked from Main Street, but there was a gravel parking lot and probably plenty of street parking.
The playground is near a picnic pavilion and a party was happening the day we were there. There's also Ron's Ice Cream shop just across the street from the park.
We'd definitely plan to stop by here again come leaf peeping season.
There isn't much about the Beacon Memorial park, but did you know Mt. Beacon once had the world's steepest incline railroad.
