A fun, if small playground just off 6A in Yarmouth Port
We visited this playground on a mild, but still cold day this past winter. Situated in the bright sun, we managed a bit of running around before darkness settled in.
This playground is on the smaller side out on the Cape. It's typical of many smaller neighborhood playgrounds in the city, but I do wonder how it might handle summer time crowds. Most of the other playgrounds here are much larger to accommodate the summer crowds.
It was new and modern. The town's website doesn't even have updated pictures of the playground, and there's always something positive about playing on new equipment before the elements, time, and abusive children have ruined it.
I could see how this would be a great place to gather on a warm summer evening before a dinner reservation. There's no messy sandbox or water feature – it's not far from Grey's Beach, which is a protected inlet on the bay.
We stopped at Fred Thatcher on the way to the boardwalk at Grey's Beach. This footpath extends in the marsh – another great little walk in the evenings, though two important notes: beach parking tags are required during the day in the summer, and at all times, it's easy to drop your phone through the boardwalk slats. There's also another little playground here.
The Fred Thatcher Playground does sit just along 6A, which can be quite busy in the height of summer. But the park is technically fenced in, even if the playground is open to the wider field. The field is pleasant enough and there's also a basketball hoop with an asphalt path. We had no trouble parking along the street, although it was also the middle of winter.
Fred Thatcher was a local resident and coach who led local teams to state titles. The was dedicated to him in 2015 on property originally donated by the Thatcher family in the 1800s.
