The Orleans playground is large, and often filled with children at all times of the year. It's a great place for kids to end up playing with other kids.
The climbing equipment and slides are generally pretty good, but we can't keep our toddler out of the sandbox here. Ironically, we could simply go to the beach and have the world's largest sandbox. The playground collects old toys, and the sandbox especially is littered with old trucks, buckets, shovels, and whatever else people leave behind.
There is also usually a mix of riding cars like the red and yellow Little Tyke Cozy Coupe and toy kitchens. Of course the smaller kids always want the same toy.
This playground is the center of community recreation. The nearby soccer fields have tournaments, and the other spaces like pickle ball courts and baseball fields are popular too. It's entirely possible to walk here from downtown Orleans with safe sidewalks along the road. We're basically the only people to do this as everyone else drives, and generally the parking lot is more than large enough.
There is a little free library, and the selection has been both good and bad. We've returned a few books here that we've grown out of and can assure you those were good.
The playground overlooks the baseball field, home to the Orleans Firebirds, part of the cape cod summer league. We brought our toddler out to see one of the free games, but it turns out he wasn't that into baseball, so having the playground helped salvage the evening. With a little luck he'll be better at watching the game this year.
This is a great pitstop for children who need to spend a few minutes outside burning off that excessive energy, and while the general playground experience is rather ordinary, we'll regularly plan on including this stop after the farmer's market on Saturday mornings.
The playground dates back to 1913 when Louis Winslow Eldredge donated it to the town Orleans. In 1928, it became home of the Olreans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
